It’s time to stop thinking of smart homes as a Californian gimmick and start thinking about how you can make your own home wise up a bit. Quite simply, a smart home is one that’s equipped with devices and gadgets that take the everyday labour off the hands of humans, saving them time, effort and energy. Most of these devices are integrated into appliances themselves and some are add-ons; most are remote- and voice controlled, though.
Get your smarts on
You don’t have to time travel to achieve this, you can get smarter by buying a connected speaker, or a smart TV, a security system or even a smart fridge that can work out which groceries you’re running low on and add them to your weekly order.
That’s great, but I can do that myself
Well, yes, but making sure you never run out of milk is just one more thing you have to do. That said, creating a shopping list for you is only one of the things a smart home can do.
You can save energy and money
This is the main reason people go smart. If your home can tell which rooms are occupied, then it can adjust lighting, heating and aircon accordingly. If Junior likes a warm bedroom but his little sister likes it cooler, then your connected aircon can bump up the temperature a bit in his room, saving a few dollars over the summer.
Other appliances can power down when they’re not in use, saving you the bother of remembering to do this. Over the course of a year those cents add up.
You’ll be more secure
You’ve no doubt already got an alarm, but if you can add in connected cameras, lights, doorbells and motion-activated security lights, then you can keep an eye on your home from the inside and while you’re out.
About those boring routine tasks
When it really comes down to it, it’s the tedious tasks that you’ll be most pleased about. If you have an automated vacuum robot to keep on top of the floors for you and a washing machine that senses a full load and starts up without your intervention, you’ll have more free time.
You can spend all that extra free time having fun
A smart home is a fun home! You can tell your connected speaker which music to play or ask your TV to find a series that’ll suit all of you (saving some serious arguments). What’s smarter than that?
